Making it through this week without talking to Chloe has been one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do. Okay, maybe that’s an exaggeration, but just slightly. And not just because I’ve been impatient to see her beautiful, smiling face, though that’s certainly part of the reason. The other part is because of my own nerves and anxiety about what tonight might bring.

I reach into my pocket and check my phone. The message from the driver I sent to pick her up said they were leaving her apartment almost a half hour ago, so she should be arriving on my doorstep any minute. I want tonight to go well, but I won’t be shocked if it doesn’t.

More than anything, though, I want some answers. I want some clarity. I know what my guys have told me about Chloe’s life and how she spends her time. I know her schedule better than my own. I know the name of her best friend and the names of her kids’ teachers. But for all the files and documents and pictures I have at my fingertips, I don’t have much context for the information.

Why did she choose this school over that one for the twins’ education? Why did she use her savings to expand into a bookshop instead of opening another cafe? Why did she leave that morning after we slept together without even saying goodbye?

Of all the questions I have, that one is the most important. It’s also the one that keeps popping up in my head whenever I think about her. Maybe it’s my ego or my pride, but I’ve been wanting to know why she left ever since the day it happened. Pretty sure she’d agree that the sex was amazing. The whole night was amazing, as far as I can remember.

Something happened, though. Somewhere between passing out in each other’s arms and waking up the next morning, something went wrong. I hope tonight will bring the answers I’m looking for without scaring her away again.

The large round dining table seats twelve people comfortably, but tonight it’s only set for two. The candles and flowers and silver accents that my chef and the caterers set out are a little over the top for my taste, but since when has that ever stopped me? Besides, it’s a special occasion.

It certainly isn’t every night that I get to invite a beautiful woman over to my house for dinner. Sure, I could date more. I could even skip the dating and sleep around more often if sex was the only thing I was after.

That isn’t all I want from Chloe, though. Not by a long shot.

We’re working our way through the third of five courses when Chloe looks over from her seat next to me and smiles. “This is seriously the nicest dinner I’ve had in a long time. Maybe ever.”
